Every artist has moments that become defining chapters in their journey.

For me, this is one of them.

I am incredibly honored to announce that my single “One Up” has been named a 2026 Finalist in the R&B category at the InterContinental Music Awards (ICMA).

As an independent artist, receiving this recognition is both humbling and inspiring. While awards are never the reason I create music, being acknowledged by an international organization dedicated to celebrating artistic excellence is a reminder that authentic music can travel far beyond the studio where it was created.

The Story Behind “One Up”

Every song has a heartbeat.

For “One Up,” that heartbeat is self-respect.

This isn’t a love song about chasing someone.

It’s about recognizing your worth.

It’s about seeing through manipulation, empty promises, and emotional games before they take control of your life.

“One Up” speaks from the perspective of someone who has grown emotionally. A woman who refuses to be blinded by attraction or fooled by someone’s intentions. Instead of settling for uncertainty, she chooses confidence, clarity, and peace.

The message is simple:

I see through your games… and I love myself enough to walk away.

In today’s world, where relationships can often be complicated by mixed signals and emotional uncertainty, I wanted to write something empowering. A reminder that love should never require you to lose yourself.

Why This Nomination Matters

Being named an InterContinental Music Awards Finalist is more than receiving another accolade.

The InterContinental Music Awards is an international competition based in Los Angeles that celebrates music as a universal language while recognizing exceptional artists from around the world. Since its founding, the organization has welcomed musicians from more than 70 countries, regardless of genre, language, commercial success, or country of origin. Its mission is to provide independent and emerging artists with global recognition, mentorship, and industry exposure.

For independent musicians, opportunities like this are incredibly valuable.

Unlike many commercial award programs that are often driven by sales, chart performance, or mainstream visibility, ICMA focuses on artistic merit, originality, musicianship, composition, production quality, and creative expression. That means your work is evaluated for the music itself.

As someone who has spent years building an independent career, that distinction means everything.

Recognition That Opens Doors

One of the reasons this nomination is so meaningful is because of what it represents within the music industry.

According to ICMA, finalists and winners gain international visibility, mentorship opportunities from Grammy® members and industry professionals, access to a global music network, educational resources, interviews, and increased credibility for booking opportunities, grant applications, and future industry submissions. The organization also highlights that many recognized artists have gone on to receive Grammy® recognition, expand their international audiences, collaborate with notable producers and performers, and secure major performance opportunities.

For an independent artist, credibility matters.

Every nomination becomes part of your professional story.

It strengthens your artist profile.

It creates opportunities for media coverage.

It introduces your music to new listeners around the world.

Most importantly, it demonstrates that your work is being recognized on an international level by music professionals.

A Journey Built on Independence

Everything I’ve accomplished has been built one step at a time.

From becoming a Billboard-charting artist to contributing to a Grammy-nominated project, every milestone has been fueled by perseverance, faith, and a commitment to continuing to grow.

I’ve balanced my career in technology while pursuing music because I believe creativity and innovation belong together.

I’ve learned that independence isn’t about doing everything alone.

It’s about believing in your vision even when the road isn’t easy.

This nomination reminds me that those years of dedication continue to lead to meaningful opportunities.

Thank You

To every person who has streamed “One Up,” supported my music, attended a performance, shared my work, or encouraged me throughout this journey…

Thank you.

Your support has helped transform a dream into something much bigger than I ever imagined.

This nomination belongs to all of us.

Looking Ahead

The winners of the 2026 InterContinental Music Awards will be announced during the official online awards ceremony on August 23, 2026. Until then, I’ll continue doing what I’ve always done:

Writing honest music.

Creating with purpose.

And believing that every song has the power to change someone’s life.

Whether “One Up” takes home the award or not, this recognition is already a victory.

It’s proof that authentic storytelling still matters.

It’s proof that independent artists can compete on the global stage.

And it’s another reminder that sometimes, the greatest victory isn’t winning an award…

It’s refusing to settle for anything less than your truth.

Thank you for being part of this incredible journey.

With gratitude,

Melissa B.
